Northern myths. Dedicated to the great potential of animators!

December 16, 2018, on the Yamal Animation Day, celebrated the anniversary of the popular cartoon character.

The first Yamal cartoon “How Nyanchedo Myniku taught a man to fly” was created on the basis of comics about the adventures of a Nenets bird man. Heroes twenty years ago, the artist and screenwriter Ekaterina Steponaytis came up with and drew. The first show took place on December 16, 2005.

Nyanchedo Myniku is a character in Nenets mythology, a dumb man-bird and the spirit of the song of the North, an intermediary between man and the gods. At the end of the last century, he was mentioned by some ethnographers who studied the folklore of the peoples of the North. We traveled through the tundra, camps, recorded ancient oral tales transmitted from generation to generation.

Today, “Myniku” is a children's animation studio, where children create their small masterpieces using traditional and modern technologies - plasticine, pencils, three-dimensional and computer graphics ... As an example, the district project “The Alphabet of the Arctic”.

- If until November 2015 there were no more than five children's studios in Yamal, now their number has increased by more than five times. Today, studios make one common project - the animated series “The Alphabet of the Arctic”, in which there will be thirty-three series. The premiere is scheduled for April of this year, ”said Mikhail Korobov, head of the Salekhard Children's Animation Studio“ Myniku ”.

Irina Okotetto, a member of the association “Yamal to descendants!”, Congratulated the creators of the cartoon:

“This cartoon many years ago alarmed and agitated many, especially the indigenous people of the North. Our Yamal animators have a lot of potential and opportunities, I wish them creative success, new successful projects dedicated to the culture of indigenous northern peoples.

P.S. While the newspaper’s issue with this article was being prepared for publication, an unexpected and joyful message came from India for Yamal animators. The animation movie “How Nyanchedo Myniku taught a man to fly” (2005) was included into the program of the International festival of animation cinema Tribal Animation Film Festival (TAFF). The festival will take place in the city of Shillong (India) from March 1 to March 3, 2019. Organizers of a festival sent invitations for Ekaterina Steponaytis and Mikhail Korobov with the offer to arrive to India and to take part in TAFF-2019. Letters with a request to support a visit of the Yamal animators to Shillong are sent to the address of the Russian animated film association (RAFA) and Dmitry Artyukhov, the Governor of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District.

Inspired by the wonderful news from India, Mikhail and Ekaterina decided to make a kind of creative gift for the festival. Knowing that in India, a cow is considered a sacred animal, they made a cow from plasticine from the famous and cult Soviet cartoon "Plasticine Crow" (1981, director - Alexander Tatarsky).

Yamal animators highly respect the work of Alexander Tatarsky (1950 - 2007). In 2011, when the 30th anniversary of the appearance on the screen of the cartoon "Plasticine Crow" was celebrated, the young animators created the cartoon "Plasticine Mytaho." Especially for this cartoon Katerina blinded the background with a portrait of the great Russian director Alexander Tatarsky.

In 2012, the 100th anniversary of Russian animation was celebrated. This year, experts from the animation community made a list of the 100 best cartoons in a hundred years of Russian animation. The cartoon "Plasticine Crow" took the honorable fourteenth place in this hundred.

Of course, the Cow in this cartoon is not as popular as the Crow. But now, in the light of new events, we will reconsider the "Plasticine Crow" in a new way, finding in the image of the Cow purely Indian motifs. We think that Alexander Tatarsky would happily laugh together with us.

And forgive us for so arbitrary treatment of his favorite characters. Because it is precisely in this that, in our deep conviction, lies the inextinguishable passion for new creative discoveries, the exploration of the new. The possibility of doing the impossible - this is precisely what attracts animated films to itself. And when the images and cartoon characters begin to build bridges between cultures and nations, the magic power of cinema becomes apparent.

Good luck, TAFF-2019!

Warm greetings from the cold Russian Arctic!

We wish the realization of our plans - to the organizers!

Peace, Light, Love and the all-conquering thirst for creativity to all participants!

Learn to look and see "magical, kind, eternal" - to all spectators of the festival!
