“How Nyanchedo Myniku Taught a Man to Fly”
Author: Far away on the northern island Waigach there lived ancient stone idols Vesako and Pukhutsya, an Old Man and an Old Woman. And one day…
Myniku: Agu-agu-aguti!
Old Woman: Old Man, we gave birth to a strange boy. He can fly like a bird, and talk like a man.
Old Man: May be it is Minley, shaman’s mate? Let’s ask the One-Horned Shaman.
Old Man and Old Woman together: Shaman, Shaman!
Author: The One-Horned Shaman saw the strange boy and laughed.
One-Horned Shaman: Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha! This is not Minley, this is Nyanchedo Myniku. Here’s a malitsa (a fur coat) and a belt for him – let him fly to the Man. The Man can talk, he needs to be taught to fly. Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha.
Myniku: It is not funny! Give me the malitsa, quickly!
Author: The Old Man and the Old Woman barely managed to say good-buy to him.
Old Man and Old Woman (together): “Lakomboi”! (Good-bye! (Nenets.)
Author: Myniku was flying high above the land and thinking:
Myniku: Why don’t men fly as birds?
Author: As soon as Myniku reached Yamal, an arrow was aiming at him. He cried:
Myniku: Don’t shoot! I am not a game-bird, I am Nyanchedo Myniku! I can fly and I can talk. I am looking for the Man to teach him to fly!
Man: Congratulations! You’ve found what you were looking for. I am the Man. I can talk, my arrows can fly. Go to the sky and find out what is going on there!
Author: Myniku went to the sky and said:
Myniku: I am Nyanchedo Myniku! The Man wants to know what is going on in the sky.
Reindeer Giver: I am Ilebyam Pertya, Reindeer Giver. I am giving the Man a herd. He has to sacrifice a reindeer to me – after that he will be able to go to the next sky.
Author: Myniku took the settlement paper and went back from the first sky to the Man.
Myniku: Ilebyam Pertya gave you a whole herd. Sacrifice a reindeer to him. You will be able to fly above the first sky.
Man: He has lots of reindeers, even without my sacrifice! Now I need to take care of the herd. So you fly above the first sky and find out what’s going on there.
Author: And again, the land of Yamal was way down, and Myniku was high up in the sky.
Myniku: I am a Bird-Man! The Man wants to know what is going on in the sky!
Num: Here lives Num, who created the Man, the birds and the land. The Man has to offer a reindeer in sacrifice, after that he will be able to fly in six skies!
Author: Myniku came back to the Man and gave the Num’s words to the Man. The Man’s answer was:
Man: Num didn’t give me a scabby reindeer’s calf, but wants me to sacrifice a whole reindeer. Why do I have to learn to fly? You can talk. Go to the sixth sky and find out what is going on there!
Author: “Oh, it is so difficult to teach the Man to fly!” – thought Nyanchedo Myniku. He was way up in the sixth sky.
Myniku: I am Nyanchedo Myniku. The Man wants to know what is going on in the sixth sky!
Shamans’ Father: Listen to Shamans’ Father! The Man still has some time. If he sacrifices a reindeer, he will be able to fly to the seventh sky and learn its secret.
Author: Meanwhile the Bird-Man became famous.
Man: The secret of the seventh sky! I believed in you, Myniku! They don’t need any sacrifice! You will be our hero! Off you go!
Myniku: But nobody, nobody will see and nobody, nobody will learn the secret of the seventh sky! O-o! U-uu! Hello to the seventh sky! I think you’ve heard about me. How about the secret?
Master of the Sacred Birch: I will show you the secret! Very soon Hebidya Ho Erv, Master of the Sacred Birch will lift the tree, and the water from its roots will flood the whole world. Those who can fly will save themselves.
Myniku: This is a sensation! I am flying back to the Man to tell him about it!
Master of the Sacred Birch: No, this is a secret. You have just said your last word. You can not speak any more, because you haven’t taught the Man to fly. You are dumb now.
Author: Myniku returned to the island Waigach. His parents were so happy to see him. They greeted him tenderly:
Old Man and Old Woman (together): “Nani torovo, son”! (Hi, son! (Nenets.)
Author: But nothing made Myniku happy. He was grieving, poor fellow – a dumb man can’t give interview, sing songs or make phone calls. Even One-Horned Shaman will not help.
One-Horned Shaman: Medicine is powerless in this case. You fly, Nyanchedo Myniku and be dumb. Some people are in much worse trouble than you.
Author: Meanwhile, Hebidya Ho Erv, Master of the Sacred Birch slowly was lifting the tree. Water was going down from his roots, the world was sinking into the deep. But those will be saved who listens to Nyanchedo Myniku. Those who learned to fly.
